Homeland Insecurities

looking to the RightIt was a Republican who first called it Homeland Security.  It was a Republican who formalized a massive new layer of federal government around homeland security.   I am sad to say that it is a Republican who has done the most to undermine the security of the homeland since the threat of World War II.  What are we thinking?  As Republicans, we should be following conservative principles.  We should be leaving other people alone unless they threaten or attack us.

Given that thinking, why haven't we put all our efforts into finding and punishing Osama Bin Ladin?  Our Republican president (or was it the Vice President?) said we couldn't find Bin Ladin in the mountains of Afghanistan because it would take too many troops.  I seem to recall one general supporting the President saying it could take another 20,000 troops and cost hundreds of American lives.  Obviously, we didn't go after Bin Ladin in an all-out way.  We went after Saddam Hussein instead.  As a result, Bin Ladin mocks us and threatens us and shows the world that we can't avenge the dead of 9/11.  He continues to set the example for other terrorists -- the example that you can attack the USA and they don't have the courage to chase you if you make it tought enough for them.

The War On Terror

osama - happy and freeIt's not in Iraq!  It is not a conservative value to take over other countries or overthrow dictators to begin with.  Today we fight terrorists in Iraq.  Those terrorists are only there because we are there.  There were no al-Qaeda in Iraq prior to our invasion.  We all know there were no WMDs.  We just wanted to get Hussein and we did.

But, the cost!  Thousands of Americans have died in Iraq.  We are borrowing billions of dollars, mostly to enrichen the executives of one major company.  We are doing worthless things and hurting innocent people.  All of that is bad.  None of that is acceptable to true conservatives.  It's a bad situation, but what is awful is that we are doing very little to protect America.

Homeland Security is not fighting the war on terror and it's not protecting our borders or our homeland.  To do that, we must stop the senseless economic drain, quit training the terrorists who go to Iraq to learn how to kill Americans.  We must instead, focus on two areas.  First, we need to actively pursue Osama Bin Ladin and second, we need to hunt down his organization, keeping them out of the US in the process.

So Let's Secure The Borders

Sample ImageIf we are talking conservative principles here, we need to be practical.  If we want to secure our borders, we need to understand where the weaknesses are.  If you were a terrorist, would you go to Mexico and try to sneak across the border with a thousand border patrol agents on the other side?  Hmmm.  Maybe if you were a really dumb terrorist.  Maybe you would consider going to Canada and crossing at one of those seldom-manned crossing points.  Maybe you'd choose to use a small fishing boat and come in from Canada.

It's not that Canada is any greater risk, it's that it doesn't make any sense to protect part of one border and not protect them all.  I know, I have strayed from the conservative ideals to a specific failure of the current administration.  My point is, a real conservative wouldn't have missed all these points and left us weaker than we were 8 years ago.  Real conservative thinking would not have spent every national dime and then borrowed us into a horrible debt with nothing to show for it.  I think real conservative thinking would have demanded that we go after the bad guys who attacked us and turned the rest of the resources to work on keeping us safe from further attacks.  Real conservative thinkers would not have us hunkered down in another country losing thousands of lives trying to convert the country's people to a form of government they don't want.  Real conservative thinkers would have us taking care of our own.
